THE PRODUCER: The Belfiore family has been farming since the 1800s. Their farm, the Azienda Mirogallo, is on 70 acres of land in Lucania, the southern portion of Basilicata.Matera’s surrounding area is knows as Lucana, a very fertile valley dotted with family farms, locally named “Masserie.”
The Mirogallo family is specialized in the cultivation and preservation of heirloom varieties of fruit and vegetable from which they hand-make very high quality pantry products. Every summer, the Mirogallo farm is bustling with many farm-workers hand harvesting perfectly sun-ripe fruit and vegetables. Inside the old white washed farm building, a state-of- the-art kitchen transforms the bounty of every day into a wide array of jars of all color and sizes.
